Award-winning jewelry designer, Alice Bilello, will be setting up her tools and jewels on Labor Day, September 2 and Tuesday, September 3 from Noon to 3pm in Greater Good Gallery at 228 Craven Street in downtown New Bern. Bilello will help you design your own jewelry for yourself for the perfect gift. Choose from a variety of colors to assemble a necklace or earrings with semi-precious stones, Czechoslovakian beads, cultured fresh-water pearls, Swarovski crystals, freeform, polished coral, Mother-of-Pearl, variegated green agate, green picture jasper, greenish-grey fluoride, onyx and quartz.
Bilello designed her first piece of gold beads, pearls and Malachite 32 years ago, however she kept her full time job and it was just a hobby. Four years ago, Bilello's sister encouraged her to pursue jewelry design and since then, she has won two national awards including a pearl design competition in a national jewelry publication. Audrey Brinson, a graduate with a Bachelors of Fine Art in jewelry and metals, taught Bilello the tricks of the trade - how a jeweler makes jewelry. Bilello shares, "Audrey sent me to a gem show where I was instantly inspired by the beautiful display millions of stones." The excitement from the gem show spurred Bilello's passion to become a full-time jewelry designer. Bilello started her own creative business, Harbor Island Designs. Bilello will be demonstrating her craft during Artwalk, September 13 at the NC History Center Museum store where her jewelry creations are currently on display. While in Oriental, you can visit Marsha's Cottage to see more of her contemporary jewelry designs. For more information, please visit www.greatergoodgallery.com or call 252-649-1712. |

New Bern's Authors at Greater Good Gallery seek to inspire future writers during "Book Signing Week"
Meet newly published author Amy Snook on Tues., July 23 from 2pm - 6pm.
Meet the multi-award winning author Kenneth Capps on Wed., July 24 from 5pm - 6pm. Inquire about the quilts and ghosts in the gallery during Karen Dodd's book-signing on Thurs., July 25 from 11am to 2pm. Our local author and potter, Ben Watford will be signing his collection of titles on Fri., July 26 from 2pm - 4pm. |
Snook will be introducing her new book, "The Green Eraser." Snook remarks, " It's a young adult novel addressing relevant issues such as immigration and prejudice and resonates with every student’s desire to belong." Her book describes the predicament of "the new kid" involved with a silly prank that almost turns lethal. Will everyone remain silent and protect the guy they have known forever, or will they stand up for the new kid who comes from a country thousands of miles away?
Capps will discuss his book "Forgiving Waters" in more detail. Penned with healing in mind, Capps offers coping mechanisms to disarm bullies and heal decades of damage. Semper Fi Mitchell Bell insists that Capps' book is timely with the current racial tensions throughout America. Capps explains, "The issues of race are softened by the sheer beauty of nature and friendship." "Barbed wire cuts on both sides of the fence," is a bold quote on its back cover speaking on social issues.
Dodd reveals, "I now write quilts!" Due to a minor stroke several years ago, the award-winning author no longer writes novels. To express the words that keep hopping around in her head, Dodd designs quilts with words. The award winning author says that her Riverwalk Mystery series of books takes readers on a journey through coastal NC towns, including New Bern. While describing "Spirit of Union Point" Dodd claims, "75% of the story is true. With thorough research, I based the book on the early history and Civil War stories of New Bern's Isaac Taylor and its ghosts."
Watford's wild-west adventure begins with a twist in his book, "A Man, A Mule and a Gun." Lead character, Jumo Gumasaka was young when he was captured and shipped to the Americas in a slave ship. After the civil war, the ex-slave obtains a colt revolver and heads toward the "Wild-West" with a mule that he calls Nellie.
Poking fun at the institution of marriage, Watford basis his own journey through everlasting love with wife Barbara in "The Complete Book of Fussing and Nagging." In the book, Watford declares, "I write this for all the men out there who have wives that fuss and nag. You should consider it in the genes of the species that we call women." Watford's book offers a hilarious insight at the daily perils of a long-term relationship.
Visit the landmark structure to meet the authors and ghosts, now home to Greater Good Gallery and Isaac Taylor Garden. For more information, phone (252) 649-1712.
